As someone who has been immersed in the world of PR, communications and business development (with some aviation and cabin crewing in the mix as well!), I've been involved in innovation, innovative ideas and collaborations that have helped to drive change. Yet, as I pivot my career towards sustainability and net-zero initiatives, I'm noticing a curious trend. Job descriptions in the environmental sector often read like a tight script – specific degrees, rigid experience criteria – almost as if we're selecting for a part in a play, not a dynamic role in shaping our planet's future. But isn't sustainability all about innovation and interconnected solutions? I wear the badge of a 'generalist' with pride, because in today's complex ecosystem, isn't a ‘Solutionist' (thank you Solitaire Townsend for coining this term and for writing an excellent book on the topic) what we need? My journey, including co-founding a video production business and forging strategic partnerships, may not fit the traditional mould. Yet, it equips me with a unique toolkit towards tackling the multifaceted challenges of sustainable development. This summer, I furthered my commitment by completing the Business Sustainability Management course at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL). And now, I'm eager to merge my diverse skill set with my purpose, but the path isn't without its obstacles. I'm curious – are there others navigating this shift? How are you balancing the drive for a purpose-aligned career with the practicalities of life? I’d love to hear how our varied experiences can become our greatest asset in building a sustainable future. In a rapidly changing world Richard Freeman at always possible could be the person you need to speak to about how you can effect positive change, while navigating your business through this uncertainty. Purpose led businesses are in a stronger position to thrive and are what the world needs right now. If that idea floats your boat then Richard and Always Possible can help.

Why would you be remotely interested in what I'm doing? And what does your mission have to do with me? This could be a snarky put down. Or they could be useful questions when you're trying to communicate something you want the world to know about. For the past 24 years I’ve been designing partnership projects and collaborative programmes. That tell stories about people doing, changing, building, experimenting with brilliant things. Events, festivals, toolkits, debates, podcasts, videos, webinars, conferences and pamphlets - that showcase and build influence for really exciting organisations that are changing the world. I'm not really a marketing person. Or a traditional PR expert. But I know how to create ripples of influence and conversation. I've helped win people £multimillion contracts, enabled people to change bad policy and opened up whole avenues of opportunity through good storytelling. Responsible brands should get talked about by new audiences, if they are committed to people, communities, a waste-free world and lifelong learning. I'm offering some free brainstorming sessions for business and charity leaders with teams of over 20. Want to get your name out there more, because of the impact you're having?
